What is a grounded outlet?

A grounded outlet, also known as a three-prong outlet, is designed to protect against electric shock in the event of a malfunction or short circuit. It has three slots – two vertical slots for the hot and neutral wires, and a round hole for the ground wire. The ground wire provides a path for excess electricity to safely flow into the ground instead of through a person touching the outlet.

Grounded outlets are required in areas where water is present, such as kitchens, bathrooms, and outdoor spaces, as well as in areas where there may be higher risks of electrical shock or short circuit, such as workshops or garages. Using grounded outlets can help prevent electrical fires and protect electronics and appliances from damage.

It is important to make sure that all outlets in a home are properly grounded and to never remove the third prong from a plug in order to fit it into a two-prong outlet. If you are unsure if your outlets are properly grounded, it is a good idea to have an electrician inspect them.
